Overview:
In this keynote conference session, Her Honour Judge Elizabeth Brimer will provide a comprehensive overview of the County Court of Victoria Arbitration List and the process of referring cases to arbitration under the Civil Procedure Act. The session aims to enhance the participants understanding of the arbitration procedures and the benefits it offers for the efficient resolution of civil disputes.

Her Honour Judge Elizabeth Brimer KC was appointed to the County Court of Victoria on 16 April 2019. She is Judge in charge of the Arbitration List and a Vice President of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
Before her appointment, her Honour built a wide and varied practice at the Victorian Bar including in commercial law, administrative law, common law, criminal law, and OH&S law. Her Honour appeared in the Federal Court of Australia, Victorian Court of Appeal and the Supreme Courts of Victoria, Western Australia and the ACT, in trials, class actions, coronial inquests, royal commissions and WorkSafe prosecutions.
Her Honour developed expertise in sports law. She was briefed by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority in doping matters, appeared on behalf of Racing Victoria and Harness Racing Victoria, was a Cricket Australia Code of Conduct Commissioner, and chaired other sports’ disciplinary and member protection tribunals.
Her Honour served on the Department of Justice Human Research Ethics Committee for ten years, on the Victorian Bar Council on two occasions, and was Deputy Chair and Chair of the Sports Law Section of the Commercial Bar Association. Her Honour was an advocacy instructor with the Australian Advocacy Institute, the Bar Readers’ course and a sessional lecturer in ‘Trial Practice & Advocacy’ and ‘Advocacy, Theory & Practice’ (LLM) at Monash University.
Her Honour was a Board member of the Victoria Law Foundation, a member of the Board’s Audit, Finance and Investments subgroup and chaired the Grants subgroup.
Her Honour completed the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Diploma of International Commercial Arbitration in 2016 and became a Fellow of the CIArb in 2018. She was appointed arbitrator on the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) general list of arbitrators in 2021 and was re-appointed in 2023. Her Honour was appointed to the CAS ad hoc panel of arbitrators for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
